Gimli is a central character in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy novel, *The Lord of the Rings*, set in Middle Earth. He is a Dwarf warrior, son of Glóin, and a member of the Fellowship of the Ring.

Gimli first appears in *The Fellowship of the Ring*, the first book in the trilogy, when he attends the Council of Elrond in Rivendell. He is chosen as one of the representatives of the free peoples of Middle Earth to accompany Frodo Baggins on his quest to destroy the One Ring.

Throughout the journey, Gimli's initial distrust of Elves evolves into a deep and lasting friendship with Legolas, an Elven prince. His fierce loyalty, bravery in battle, and hearty humor make him a beloved and memorable character.
